About Tiger Sharks

Scientifically known as the Galeocerdo cuvier, these apex predators can range anywhere between 10 to 14 feet and weigh between 850 to 1,400 pounds. A little fun fact about tiger sharks is that the females tend to be larger than the male species!

Named for their dark, vertical stripes, the tiger shark is one of the most misunderstood shark species. Unfortunately, they gained a negative reputation due to the movie industry. Tiger Shark Diet

When it comes to the diet of the tiger shark, there really is no set menu. From eating sea snakes, turtles, whales and even smaller sharks, they will eat whatever they can get their “fins” on. They even eat man-made objects as these items were found in their stomachs. 

Their powerful jaws allow them to slice through their prey with a surplus of new teeth ready to replace the worn-out ones. Their teeth are sharp and highly serrated, they can crack open the likes of sea turtle shells and clams.

In general Maldive shark dives are safe. However, it is important to highlight that as with all activities there is a risk involved because we are entering the sharks’ environment and territory. Divers need to remember to always be respectful of the sharks and if divers do decide to dive the tiger sharks or any other sharks, to dive with professionally trained shark safety divers.

2. Can I dive with tiger sharks if I do not have scuba diving experience?

No, you will not be able to dive with tiger sharks if you do not have scuba diving experience and are not a certified diver. Divers need to be a minimum Open Water certified to dive with tiger sharks.

3. Do you hand feed tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah when going for Maldives shark dives?

No, we do not hand feed tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah when going for Maldives shark dives. Our tiger shark dives in Fuvahmulah are baited dives but this practice of providing tuna fish parts to tiger sharks is not something new. Generations of Fuvahmulah fishermen have been discarding tuna and other fish wastes back into the ocean after cleaning their catch of the day. Tiger sharks being opportunistic predators have always followed these fishing boats, waiting for fish to be caught on fishing lines or for fish wastes to be discarded.
